Keeping in Shape by Doing the Things You Love

Are you one of the millions of people who are trying to lose some unwanted weight? Would you like to get in better shape? Do you hate to even think of having to fork over a couple of hundred dollars to join the local gym just in order to stay fit?
I have several activities which I enjoy doing, and by doing these things, I am able to keep my weight under control and stay in decent form. There are probably things that you like to do also that can help you burn calories and have some fun at the same time.
For instance, in the fall I enjoy going into the forest and hunt for the fall species of the elusive chanterelle mushroom. These mushrooms thrive in the thickest part of the woods-often hiding nestled under birch trees and in the deepest moss beds. They are often found on the sides of hills, so if you want to locate an abundance of these great mushrooms, it requires a bit of leg work in order to do so.
My best friend and I, along with my dog, head out to the local wooden area near my home where we know, if the season's conditions were right, that there will be baskets full of chanterelle to take home with us. We start our climb up paths made by the many moose who make those forests their home. It takes us a good fifteen minutes just walking the foot paths up the big hill to get to where we know the mushrooms are, year after year.
Once in the thickest portion of the woods, we start seeing the golden brown mushrooms peeking up from the thick moss and begin the challenge of stepping over rocks, fallen trees and small creeks to reach the picking areas. We spend on average, an hour and a half on each expedition, then make the fifteen minute descent back down the rugged trails to where we parked the car.
Everyone benefits. We surely have gotten a pretty rugged workout without thinking too much about it. We just spent about two hours doing some pretty significant physical activity. The climbing, high stepping, bending and roaming in the thick moss surely burned some considerable calories, gave us a cardiovascular workout and our legs and backs got great exercise at the same time.
This type of workout is really no workout at all. We always carry a thermos of coffee and make time on each outing to take a rest by sitting on a big rock in the sun and enjoy the view, both of the nature and the view of the full baskets of mushrooms!
So the next time you wonder what you could do to burn calories or get some exercise, try to think of activities that you really enjoy doing outdoors. Call a friend and ask them to join you. Everything is more fun to do if you have company. The benefits are great in many ways!
